Our children CAN grow up happy, healthy and able to function better by building on meaningful partnerships with community-based services and support.
Bexar CARES weaves together a system and service partnership to create a blanket of support that helps children and families achieve success.
Help Bexar CARES raise funds to provide children and their families access to effective programs that provide mental health services.
Coordinated Access to Resources Equals Success
Bexar CARES is a grant-funded program designed to develop, grow and enhance a coordinated system of care throughout the City of San Antonio in support of healthy behavioral and emotional development for children ages 3 to 8.
The Bexar CARES system also promotes wraparound services that are focused on children and families struggling with behavioral and emotional challenges as well as mental illness. The Wraparound process improves the lives of children with complex needs and their families by developing individualized plans of care.
Bexar CARES proudly supports and encourages stigma-reduction efforts to help change attitudes and beliefs about early childhood mental health needs, training and evaluation; and works hard to remove the barriers and discrimination created by stigma. Judgment almost always stems from another’s lack of understanding rather than information based on facts. You can help educate others and make a big difference by understanding your loved one’s condition and seeking treatment and support for it.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING
What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.
Mental Health First Aiders are…
Teachers, first responders and veterans. They’re neighbors, parents and friends. They’re people in recovery, and those supporting a family member. They’re First Ladies and Mayors. Mental Health First Aiders are anyone who wants to make their community healthier, happier and safer for all.

Bexar CARES is a $3.9 million federally funded 4-year cooperative agreement expansion grant with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program is designed to support the growth of a system that will provide seamless care for the behavioral and emotional needs of children ages 3 through 8. It is administered by the City of San Antonio in partnership with The Center for Health Care Services (CHCS). Bexar CARES received initial funding in October 2014 that will continue through September 2018. Bexar CARES must match the federal funds with in-kind contributions from the community.
